LIMBO Fits Its Name Well

LIMBO Outdoor Patio

I decided to venture out for lunch close to my apartment in Palermo Soho today.  It was cold outside despite the sun shining, so I only had enough patience to walk down Armenia street to check things out.  I had passed LIMBO (Armenia 1820) on numerous walks that I’ve taken into the heart of Palermo Soho.  Most of the time, the beautiful semi-outdoor patio is always packed with stylish-looking people.  I decided to try it out today.

LIMBO Prefixed Menu

I should have gotten the clue right off the bat when I approached the waiter and asked him in my basic Spanish if I could take a seat.  His response, while I’m sure would make sense to any native Spanish speaker, was brusque and dismissive (he didn’t even make eye contact with me as he was speaking).  I took a seat anyway.  I really appreciated the modern aesthetics of the patio seating area.  And even with this cold weather we’re getting in Buenos Aires, it felt comfortably warm in the covered patio area with the heaters on.  The open space allows you to watch people  walk by the restaurant.  Also restaurant patrons take full advantage of seating “outdoors” to smoke during their meals.  The leather seating is a beautiful touch.

LIMBO – Salad of the day

Like most restaurants that I’ve been to, there’s often a prefixed menu.  The AR$37 option that I chose came with an appetizer, a main course, a dessert, and a drink.  For each part, there are three or four choices you can pick from.  I was able to easily translate the options for the starters, and chose a spinach salad with sun-dried tomatoes and Parmesan cheese. However, for the main course, I had a bit of trouble making anything out.  I couldn’t access a Wi-Fi connection with my phone to help me translate the choices, and so I was left essentially to pick something at random.  What I thought was a Milanese of either pork or chicken, wound up being made of soy.  It was only later that I discovered that I ordered the vegetarian meal: Milanese soy patties with cream of spinach and pureed squash.  And for my dessert, I chose a flan that came with a side of dulce de leche.

LIMBO – Soy Milanese with Cream of Spinach and Pureed Squash

Where do I begin?  The presentation of the salad was just messy.  My main course looked just like it tasted – a hot mess.  Because there was hardly any flavor in the meal, I had to keep sprinkling salt on it.   The soy Milanese had the consistency of cardboard.  The presentation of the dish looked very unappealing.  And the mound of pureed squash clashed disturbingly against the cream of spinach sauce.  I couldn’t finish the meal. You might be saying, “Well, Jan, you didn’t know what you were ordering!”  While right you are, I remained, however, opened-minded about the whole experience and expected something (a) that, at the very least, had flavor and (b) was presented aesthetically.  The dish that I was served fulfilled neither expectation.

Flan with Dulce de Leche

The dessert was the only good thing from my experience today.  The restaurant must go through buckets of dulce de leche since my dessert came with what could be described as a very large scoop.  The flan definitely helped cleanse my palate after my mediocre main dish.

Would I go back?  Probably not.
